The French Door That Almost Broke Our Daltile Subway Tile Project

The kitchen smelled like fresh-cut porcelain — dusty and clean, with a little sweetness baked in. If you've spent years around tile jobs, you know that smell. It means the saw is running smoothly and nothing has caught fire yet.

Then Mrs. Armstrong walked in and said, “So. What are we doing about the french door?”

The tile wasn't the problem. The Daltile 3x6 white subway tile for the kitchen backsplash was already stacked in the dining room, each box labeled and accounted for. The mudroom floor tile was there too — a larger-format Daltile porcelain in a warm greige. All of it looked right. All of it measured right.

The numbers didn't agree with Greg.

The bottom of the mahogany french door sat 1-1/8 inches above the subfloor. Our planned floor assembly — underlayment, uncoupling membrane, thin-set, and tile — would finish at about 1-1/4 inches. The difference was roughly the thickness of a pencil. But a pencil is enough when it's standing between a door and a floor.

The easy answer was wrong

Let me back up, because the project itself wasn't unusual.

The Armstrongs bought their 1926 brick colonial four years ago. By March 2024, they'd survived a leaking roof, a dead furnace, and one plumbing surprise. The last item on the list was the kitchen and mudroom. The deadline was their daughter Riley's high school graduation party. Riley's cap — the actual cardboard-and-felt mortarboard, not a photo — sat on the dining room mantel like a stopwatch.

He probably had. But Greg hadn't made a study of 98-year-old mahogany doors. Roman, the finish carpenter we brought in, had. Roman looked at the door, ran a finger along the bottom edge, and shook his head.

“You don't want to cut these,” he said. “The bottom rail has a through-tenon. You trim enough off, you'll hit the mortise. Even if you don't, you're opening up old mahogany that's been sealed for a century. It'll swell, it'll stick, and it'll never swing the same again.”

Roman wasn't being precious about old wood. He was protecting the Armstrongs from a problem they wouldn't discover until the following winter, when the door started sticking in the cold. And by then, we'd be long gone.

What a house can teach you about specs

Here's where I have to be honest about the limits of my own expertise. I'm not a finish carpenter. I'm not a structural engineer. I don't know the grain direction of a mahogany stile, and I won't pretend to. What I do know is tile: what it can handle, what it needs underneath it, and what happens when somebody tries to “make it work” an hour before trim.

So I called a meeting out on the back steps. Greg. Roman. The project manager. And Mrs. Armstrong, who came out holding a laptop in one hand and two cups of coffee in the other.

She handed me a mug and asked, completely serious, if I knew how to block websites on chrome. Her youngest son had found a browser game that looked suspiciously like homework, and the school filter only worked on school devices. I wrote down the router-level setting that would do it. She laughed and said, “If I can get this house ready in six weeks, I can figure that out too.”

That moment mattered more than anyone realized. We'd been talking about tolerances and through-tenons and subfloor height. The solution had to respect that.

What actually worked

We didn't cut the door. Instead, we changed what was under the tile.

The original spec called for a thick underlayment board over the new plywood subfloor. That was part of the 1-1/4-inch total height. By switching to a thinner uncoupling membrane and adjusting the underlayment schedule, we brought the finished floor down just enough to clear the door — while still staying within the manufacturer's published installation requirements for the tile.

It wasn't glamorous. It added about a day to the schedule and a few hundred dollars to the budget. Greg grumbled, because grumbling is part of his process. But when he dry-fit a test row of tile under the door and closed it without a scrape, he stopped grumbling.

“Okay,” he said. “That works.”

High praise, from Greg.

The floor went down the following week. The Daltile 3x6 white subway tile went up on the backsplash in a clean brick pattern, just like the daltile catalog showed. The mudroom tile ran out through the french door opening without a janky transition strip.

Riley's graduation party happened on May 11. I know because Mrs. Armstrong texted me a photo the next morning: empty plates on the back porch, the french door standing wide open, and Riley's graduation cap still on the mantel in the background.

What I kept from that job

The tile wasn't the problem. It never is, most of the time. The problem was that we almost solved a floor-height issue with a saw.

Here's the thing I keep telling our project managers: the Daltile catalog and the spec sheet are not the same document. The catalog tells you what the tile looks like. The spec sheet tells you what the tile needs. The french door was the part of the project that reminded everyone why both matter.

I also learned something about boundaries. Roman could have taken the work, cut the door, cashed the check, and driven home. Instead, he said, “This isn't a carpentry job. You need to fix the floor height.” He was right. And I trusted him because he was willing to tell us what he wouldn't do.

That's a rare kind of professionalism. In my experience, the person who says “I don't do that” is usually the person you can trust with everything else.

So if you're planning a tile project around an old door, measure the floor assembly and the door clearance before you order anything. Find someone who'll tell you when you're about to make a mistake. And remember: the perfect tile install isn't the one that looks good in the catalog photo. It's the one that still looks good ten years later, with the door still swinging like it did the day it was hung.
