Common Technical Questions

For rectified large-format porcelain (18"×18" and larger), Daltile recommends a minimum 1/16" grout joint for floor applications. ANSI A108.02 states a minimum 1/16" joint is permitted only for rectified tile. For non-rectified tile, a minimum 1/8" joint is required. On floors subject to movement or thermal cycling, wider joints (3/16" minimum) with soft joints at field perimeters are recommended per TCNA EJ171 guidelines.

Yes, but only products specifically rated as "frost-resistant" (water absorption ≤ 0.5% per ASTM C373) should be used in exterior freeze-thaw exposure. Daltile porcelain pavers and exterior-rated collections carry this rating and include documentation confirming suitability. Additionally, the installation system — setting mortar, grout, and waterproofing membrane — must also be rated for exterior freeze-thaw use.

Each Daltile product carton includes a shade number. Always specify tiles from the same shade lot for a single installation. For large projects, order the complete quantity upfront from the same production run. Daltile provides lot reservation services for commercial projects with extended installation timelines. If adding tile later, request a shade comparison sample before ordering — our dealers can pull shades from current stock for review.
