Daltile Quality: 8 Things a QC Inspector Wants You to Know Before You Buy

I've been a quality compliance manager in the building materials industry for over six years. I review roughly 200 tile deliveries annually. What's the actual standard size for a Daltile quartz slab?

Do fish scale tiles from Daltile actually line up right?

Short answer: mostly yes. But it depends on the batch. The fish scale pattern (their "Ripple" series) is an offset pattern. Each piece has a slight arc. If the tolerance on that arc varies by more than 1/16" from tile to tile, the visual pattern breaks. What about the thickness of Daltile's subway tile? (Does 3/8" vs 1/2" matter?)

Yes. Standard Daltile subway tile is 3/8" thick. Their heavier lines (like some of the textured or artisan series) are 1/2". The 1/2" is noticeably denser. In my testing, a 1/2" tile absorbs roughly 15% less water than a 3/8" tile from the same series. If it's a wet area (shower, pool surround), I'd spec 1/2". Is Daltile worth the premium over cheaper brands?
